Is It Time for Greenshoring?

The relocation of production back to countries of origin, or reshoring, has accelerated rapidly in recent years. The pandemic, geopolitical tensions and growing pressure from markets to control environmental impact are driving a geographical and strategic reorganisation of global value chains.

Andrea Noris, Senior Associate at BMV, discusses this trend in his recent article for ISPI – Italian Institute for International Political Studies, entitled Is It Time for Greenshoring?

The reasons behind this reorganisation are not only economic and logistical. They also relate to the need to build greener and more sustainable value chains. “By bringing suppliers and production facilities closer to the end consumer, companies should be able to reduce the indirect emissions generated by their activities,” writes Noris together with Francesca Sanguineti, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Pavia.
