Food prices, particularly beef prices, have risen sharply, and inflation remains one of the White House’s primary concerns. The administration has attributed declining revenues for ranchers, as well as rising consumer prices, to a small number of companies that control the majority of the beef, pork and poultry markets.

On 3 January 2022, President Joe Biden met with farmers, ranchers and independent meat processors to discuss plans to create a more competitive supply chain, with the objective of increasing profits for family-owned farms while reducing costs for consumers.

The Biden administration intends to allocate $1 billion from the American Rescue Plan to help expand independent meat-processing capacity and provide funding that would enable independent producers to access equipment needed to improve product distribution. The White House also announced its intention to work with Congress on legislation aimed at increasing transparency in livestock markets and encouraging more competitive price negotiations.

Another key component of the administration’s plan is the introduction of new regulations designed to combat anti-competitive practices by meat packers and processors, as well as to clarify “Product of the USA” labelling requirements so that consumers can better understand the origin of the meat they purchase.
